Security Guards

Security Guards

There are a lot of these "security guards" around Mumbai who sit and watch you (or more often talk with their friends) and write down the comings and goings in large ledgers.

Don’t know if this really does anything for security, but think if we could somehow find a way to aggregate the data!

Dhobi Ghat

Dhobi Ghat

Dhobi Ghat is the large, open-air laundromat in central Mumbai. This gentlemen’s job, seven days a week, is to scoop out the water in each of the concrete bins; water which contains all sorts of nasty chemicals.

Places I Want to go: Alang Shipbreaking Yard

I’m trying to find a way to get to Alang, Gujarat to photograph the Alang Ship breaking yards:

ALANG is a wonder of the world. It may be a necessity, too. When ships grow old and expensive to run, after about twenty-five years of use, their owners do not pay to dispose of them but, rather, the opposite — they sell them on the international scrap market, where a typical vessel like the Pioneer may bring a million dollars for the weight of its steel. Selling old ships for scrap is considered to be a basic financial requirement by the shipping industry — a business that has long suffered from small profits and cutthroat competition. No one denies that what happens afterward is a dangerous and polluting process.

Anyone know how I can gain access?

Earwax Wallah

In Bombay the street is both completely shared public space and there are many people who live on extremely meager earnings. We are talking about less than $1 a day. Which means that all sorts of things which might happen behind closed doors in the West happen out on the street. So it is not uncommon to have barbers or shavers on the street; or fruit stands or drink stands on movable carts; or people who will weigh you for a Rupee.

Or in this case, a professional ear cleaner, who will clean your ears for a low, low price.

All part of an informal economy which helps keep Bombay running.
